New Delhi: Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has announced that the Supreme Court judgments will be translated into 4 regional languages including Tamil and uploaded on the court website from August 15.
Recently, an online search software was introduced to allow the search of the computerized files of the Delhi High Court. Supreme Court Chief Justice TY Chandrachud, who participated in the program, said:
99.9% of people cannot easily understand judgments in English. If the Supreme Court or the High Court does not deliver judgments in languages that the public can speak and understand, the service of the judiciary will become meaningless.
Therefore, it has been decided to translate the Supreme Court judgments published in English into 4 regional languages namely Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati and Odia and upload them on the court website from August 15.
A committee headed by Justice AS Oka has been constituted to look after the work related to the translation of judgments. Similarly, all High Courts should constitute a bench of 2 judges including a District Judge. This is what he said.
Officials of the Union Information Technology Ministry said, “The Supreme Court judgments will be gradually translated and published in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bengali languages from 2024.”
