The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, indicated that, following Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen rushed to Africa. She expressed her opinion on this matter in her Telegram channel on Wednesday, January 25.
In her post, Zakharova responded to criticism by writer Anatoly Nesmiyan, who pointed out that the kingdom of Eswatini, marked as one of the points of Lavrov’s African tour, occupies only 154th place in the world in terms of population.
In response, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that Estonia has an even smaller population – 158th in the world, and in terms of gross domestic product (GDP), Tallinn is also far from the top hundred, “despite endless Western injections to support the Russophobic outpost”.
Zakharova advised critics expressing such opinions to consider whether “it’s a coincidence that US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen followed Lavrov’s footsteps to Africa on visits to the states of the region.”
On January 23, as part of an African tour, Lavrov arrived in South Africa, which chairs the BRICS this year. He has also already visited Eswatini and Angola, following talks with the president of which the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the initiative to create a BRICS currency would be discussed at a summit in South Africa in August. According to him, a group of African countries will also be invited to the summit in South Africa.
BRICS (short for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is an interstate association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
